I'm unsure of what foods I should eat that won't cause constipation. I've had less, and it hasn't caused a problem, but I read that lettuce can constipate you. I heard spinach, rice, and potatoes. I'm totally confused. Can somebody help me?

Hi J, I would think if you up your intake of fluids, constipation shouldn't be a problem.

I'm totally confused reading your post. 😁 What is…let skin constipate you?

This group has been my go-to during my loneliest hours whenever I've had a "bag blowout" at 3am and there was no one else in the world to talk to.

Because it's a global community, there's always someone here to lend an ear, provide advice, and just hold my hand if that's all I need.

Sure, there's also a lot of camaraderie, fun topics, and laughs, but the main reason I come here is for the total acceptance I get from the members. No one else on the planet could possibly "get" what I'm going through, not even my loving husband or supportive family.

The "Meet an Ostomate" forum is definitely a one-of-a-kind family, which I am very proud to belong to.

Found so far, eat what works for you and works for you. The biggest thing is keeping hydration going. Low drinking water or fluids is a cause for constipation.

I'm having trouble with the wording of your post too, but if you are asking how to avoid constipation, I would stay away from peanut butter, cheese, potatoes, and other really starchy foods. Large amounts of red meat can also be problematic. You don't say whether you have an ileostomy or colostomy, but if you have an ileo, constipation should not be an issue at all. If you have a colostomy and still have all of your colon, things shouldn't be any different for you than they were pre-ostomy. Was constipation an issue for you before your surgery?

Hi, I have found over the years with an ileostomy, it is trial and error. The main thing is to stay hydrated, so increase fluids.

Potatoes, rice, all starchy foods, plus undercooked vegetables not only constipate but can cause a blockage.

You can still have these foods, but in small amounts and chew well.

Hope this helps.

Skins on veggies and seeds on fruits can cause blockages. I think constipation can be caused by things high in fiber and excessive amounts of cheese or dairy. Are you having issues with constipation or just afraid you might have the issue? Do you have an ileostomy or a colostomy? How recently was your surgery?

I had a bowel obstruction because of chronic constipation. Fluids help a lot. For me, I take a capful of Miralax daily because I'm at high risk of another blockage. Apple juice and prune juice are very helpful in preventing constipation, though if you're not at high risk.
