Hi there, I'm a newbie. I saw blood in my output today, but I'm hoping it came from my stoma. I'm currently waiting to have a colonoscopy. I'm a bit worried about that also. Anyone else freak out about this?

If you bump it enough, it will bleed, and it'll surprise you when you first see it.

Thanks, Alex. I was more concerned about seeing the blood in my output; I wasn't sure if it came from my stoma or internal.

I take part in these forums almost every day. They and the people that contribute to them have made all the difference in my having the courage to live a normal life with an ileostomy. The people here are marvelous and come from all walks of life and from all over the world. Hearing what others have lived through has really helped me put my own experience in perspective. I highly recommend all ostomates and caretakers of ostomates to come join us.

The first time my stoma started to bleed was an accidental swipe with my fingernail!

No, I don't wear extensions! They were well clipped! The stoma is a tender piece of flesh; treat it with care!

Lizzy, the best way to find out if it was from an accidental bump or swipe of your stoma is to change your bag and see if you still see blood. I had a consistent bleeding spot on my stoma a few months ago, and it was not from bumping it, but it did go away. Definitely ask about it at your colonoscopy for peace of mind.

Stomas are very vascular; they will bleed if you rub them, bump them, or scratch them in any way. If you are seeing a lot of blood in your output, though, that can be a bad sign, and you need to seek medical attention. There shouldn't be a big accumulation of blood in your bag.

Check if it is external or internal. The former is nothing to worry about; it will go away. The color is an indication sometimes.
