Dealing with Stoma Prolapse

I had an emergency surgery in February 2025 and woke up with an ileostomy. At six months, I was feeling good about my situation, all things considered. Then, one Sunday afternoon, I was walking around and discovered my stoma distended to the bottom of my bag. A quick trip to the emergency room, and the doctor stuffed it back in. After contacting my surgeon, I had a revision. He warned me I would probably have another prolapse, which has now occurred. I like a one-piece bag and am now wearing a hernia belt with a flap to cover the stoma so it won't pop out. But the flap restricts the output, which seems to increase leakage. Any thoughts? Am I using the proper belt? Am I wearing it properly?

Thanks

Hey, welcome.

Why are you so prone to prolapsing?

It does sound like you're not wearing the belt correctly.

See what others say when they chime in. Sit tight.

Every morning when I enjoy my big cup of coffee I scroll through this site and this warm feeling just overwhelms me.

I never post anything (too shy and it feels like I don’t have anything of interest to share tbh) but I sure read a lot of posts from you guys and they are so informative, supportive encouraging and so so full of love and a big dose of humor.

I feel like part of the best family in the world (even though I am just sitting quietly in the corner lol).

I just wanted to share that feeling and say thanks to all of you for being so wonderful.

And also, please keep some fingers crossed for me this week. I have my blood test on Thursday, checking my CA 125 levels. Ovarian cancer reoccurrence fear unlocked again. I hate it!

Lots of love from Sweden

It's hard to understand what is happening from your description. You have my sympathy, as I've dealt with prolapse before when I had a colostomy. I'm wondering why your surgeon would have warned you that another prolapse might occur after having a revision. Why have a revision if it wasn't to correct a problem? Do you have access to an ostomy nurse? Dealing with a prolapse on an ongoing basis is something I've not experienced. I don't see how wearing a hernia belt would restrict your output, and I don't know what you mean by a 'flap' to stop the prolapse. Sorry, but more information is needed, and you might just need to see a professional. Maybe it's time to get a second opinion?

Hello. I have a colostomy, 3 years old, with a mild parastomal hernia.

I have a little over an inch of prolapse. My stoma sticks out about 2+ inches most of the time and is stable. I haven't considered revision surgery. I don't want to take a chance it gets worse.

Nu-Hope Corporation makes an ostomy support belt with a prolapse strap. I have a couple of them. After you put on the belt, the strap folds over your stoma to hold it down and is secured by a Velcro closure. You can vary the amount of pressure the strap exerts on your stoma. I use mine for occasions where I want to decrease the prominence of my colostomy, like going out for a fancy dinner or attending a social event.

Nu-Hope is located in Pacoima, California. You can call them for sizing help and more information.

I have a similar belt; I referred to the prolapse strap as a flap. The prolapse strap is causing my output to pancake around stoma which seems to get under barrier ring.

Thanks

My ostomy is on my left side. My mild parastomal hernia pushes my stoma, on an angle, toward my belly button. So my output exits on an angle, prolapse strap doesn't affect it.
