I had an illeostomy for 3 1/2 yrs. I had it reversed and now ive had a colostomy for 1 3/4 yrs. My illeostomy was not noisy at all. My colostomy is extremely noisy. Gas sounds. Can anyone here suggest a way for me to help slow this down? Im embarrassed to ask my Drs/Nurses so I thought I'd ask for help for here 1st. I figured I'd have to talk to my Drs eventually but ive received great advice the past 5 yrs from this forum. So?????

Very helpful

My cats try to attack Kyle when he gets noisy. You could try Gas-X. We all have lots of gas as I found out before my ostomy and my fistula was gasing everyone in range. My poor son ran around with his tee shirt pulled up to cover his nose. Atleast now my bag contains the smell. Accept your noisy stoma as there’s not much you can do but laugh about it.

This group has been my go-to during my loneliest hours whenever I've had a "bag blowout" at 3am and there was no one else in the world to talk to.

Because it's a global community, there's always someone here to lend an ear, provide advice, and just hold my hand if that's all I need.

Sure, there's also a lot of camaraderie, fun topics, and laughs, but the main reason I come here is for the total acceptance I get from the members. No one else on the planet could possibly "get" what I'm going through, not even my loving husband or supportive family.

The "Meet an Ostomate" forum is definitely a one-of-a-kind family, which I am very proud to belong to.

Some foods will make your stoma really noisy..high fat, very sweet and some fruits and vegetables. Keep track of what you eat and if you want it to make less noise do not eat the foods that make your stoma sound like a trumpet. just eat them on the weekend and/or at home. You will still have gas but it will be less noisy..use your hand ,elbow or a jacket to muffle the sound .

Good advice so far. A food journal may help but I've found it hard to interpret with a colostomy. But it is worrh a try.

Avoid some obvious things like carbonated drinks.

Be aware that much of the gas may be swallowed air. I wish I could help more.

Umm .... uhh. 🤔aren't colostomies a bit on the quiet side compared to an ileostomy? 🤷‍♂️ I understand foods will account for the noise from either one, true. Ehh.. I guess I'm bass ackwards thinking😆

I think gases from foods that ferment in the colon would be worse with a colostomy. But I don't know for sure.

G-Day jalrein,

What do you think Doctors and Nurse's are for, you can ask them anything. They live in a world of blood and shit so go see them.

Not sure where I saw it, but there's a muffler of sorts that fits over the stoma to reduce noise. It was designed with a layer of foam, but I don't recall how it's held in place.

From the viewpoint of the one sharing space with hubz' colostomy, gas now is much quieter as there's no butt cheeks making that loud clapping sound!

His stoma, Sammy, seems to join in on conversations, and he seems to know how to add emphasis to a particular subject!😆

My apologies for being so blunt, but we've had almost 40 animals over the years so poo management is pretty much second nature. We watch it closely as it's the first indicator of any health changes, and if anyone's spent an entire night walking a colicking horse waiting and praying for it to pass gas-poo-the mineral oil it's been 'tubed' with, that sound of gas or even slight gut motility is the BEST sound in the world!!

As my beloved mother would say, 'Better out for a frolic, than in for the colic!' Seriously. She said that soooo many times!🌻

I have a COLOSTOMY, and my theory is that the noise is caused by the gas being under pressure at the entrance to the stoma, which makes the flabby skin flap and make a noise.
A simile of this is when you blow up a balloon and stretch the rubber at the exit - it makes a farting noise.(whoopy cushions do the same thing)
Therefore, (my theory goes) if you plug the entrance with something that lets the gas out freely, then you will get no noise.
Coloplast used to market a stoma plug that did precisely that. Unfortunately, they took it off the market for some unknown reason. However, someone on here said recently that they might bring it back again. (Hooray!)
I used to use their stoma plugs on a daily basis and had no problems with noise from my stoma (There is a photo of a stoma plug on my profile).
Since the stoma plugs stopped. I have been using Dansac Nova Minicaps, which seem to be the same as plugs but without the plug (& without the noise suppressant).
I have tried Tampons, but they did not work as well and there was a tendency to 'lose' them inside, which not only defeated the object of noise reduction, but was more than a little concerning in terms of health issues.
If anyone from Coloplast is listening in: "Please remarket the stoma plugs".
Best wishes

Bill

G-Day GWTF,

Were ever thou may be let your wing go free,
whether it's church or Chapel let it rattle.

Don't you just love some of the old sayings.
