Is it a blockage?

I need some advice! I have had my ostomy for a little over a year with very little issues. But in that time I have developed a partial hernia which my doc said to just keep an eye on and we could decide if I want to fix it now or fix it if I decide to close the ostomy with the reversal. I've also been on Ozempic for my diabetes and have adapted a sort of schedule with taking the medication and about how long it takes for me to have output. Ok so my dilemma is I started getting sick last week like cold or flu symptoms not serious and also started developing a pilonidal cyst on my tailbone. My PCP prescribes antibiotics for that issue so I started the pills. On Thursday I ate a small bowl of soup to chase my cold away and took a shot of NyQuil. I laid down for a nap and a couple hours later woke up with intense nausea and had a rough vomit session. I noticed my output was very watery at the time. Just drank ginger ale and had jello that day. Friday night was feeling much better and had a hamburger for dinner. My output was still watery. Yesterday I woke up starving so I made some eggs and coffee and still had a little watery output then nothing for the rest of the day. I have been passing a lot of gas. I talked to an ostomy nurse last night she said it could have been the antibiotic so I stopped taking it. Im still passing gas and have noticed very small but thicker output released overnight...I'm scared is it a blockage???

Hi. Welcome.

What type of osty do you have there?

A blockage usually means no output and pain, if that eases yur mind right now. Others will chime in but we need to know if u have a ileo or colostomy which would help a bit. Thanks.

I was a fly on the wall for a while, before I joined the group.  I think you will find it's a good bunch of people, who understand what you are dealing with like no one else could.  Glad you found us.

Hi Sarje sorry to hear not feeling well, if your not having cramps and pain behind stoma or throwing up i would say not really a blockage, maybe increase fluids like tea or some say a can of coke. good luck

Ahh ha! Same here, ileo for 9 yrs and I have been lucky never having a blockage..if you are thinking its a blockage, I'd say no..

..I think yur cold has something to do with yur output...since we ileos normally have watery discharge, may I ask of yur diet to help bulk things up? .

Hi Ron

No pain or nausea. I've been pushing water and tea. I haven't really eaten much BUT only because if it was a block I didn't want to create more output. I am starving I did manage a couple pieces of toast and peanut butter during the night. And I took a walk outside but all it did was gas

Oh Warrior misunderstood your question I'm not ileo I'm colostomy. Bulk of my diet is pretty much whatever I do try to eat more protein. I do take my digestive enzymes everyday to maintain good gut health so that is why I was worried

That's ok. Mentioning Hartmann gives me pause to say it's a colostomy bc i heard Hartmann and ileo are related. So I might have learned something new.. is Hartmann just for ileos or a just a simple procedure for both? Hmm .

I think yur, safe. Knowing u had a cold and those meds can throw u for a loop normally.

Hi Sarje maybe do soup and sammich to slowly add some bulk so it wont be just runny output and then your regular foods you normally eat.

Im thinking it's just the name of the procedure lmao. As new as I am to this world I don't know the difference between and ileo or a colostomy

Thank Ron I appreciate that advice! The ostomy nurse did tell me to incorporate peanut butter to help thicken up my output so I've been doing a piece of toast with that

Don't stop your antibiotics without talking to the doctor who prescribed them.

Could try a few marshmallows? I hear they are really good for thickening output.

Best wishes

Hi

Doesn’t sound like you’ve been eating much so the lessening of output might correlate with that?

I have been sick for almost a week, not able to eat much and having little output but I am not too concerned. As long as you are passing gas, I would say you’re okay. I have a colostomy.

I would agree with nurse and blame the antibiotics for watery output.... not eating or eating very little will be causing wind as well, will take a day or 2 after you start eating more for your ostomy to start having more output. If you start having violent vomiting or blackouts I would seek immediate medical help.
