i have a raised angry red area around one side of stoma. It is extremely painful to the touch and whenever liquid or food passes through the stoma. I have had my iliostomy for ten years without problems until now. I am currently using stoma powder and barrier wipes. The pain occurs even immediately after appliance change.

Any info as to a product to alleviate this problem would be greatly appreciated.

When I found this web site, I didn't think its name had anything to do with actually meeting an ostomate but I later learned there were some folks who did meet and develop relationships. How good is that? That wasn't my intention. I definitely didn't want anyone to meet me. I felt broken and wasn't prepared to express those feelings. I thought it was a place where ostomates wrote about themselves, posed questions, shared thoughts, told jokes and, sometimes, just vented. I thought of it as a community of folks with similar interests and various degrees of experience. Mostly I found some of the most caring, selfless, wise and understanding people I ever imagined. I was so impressed with some of the writings; not because of their literary value but the way in which they addressed such a very complex environment. I read hundreds of exchanges and admired the way folks cared for each other. I became hopeful with my own situation and looked forward to the next day's offerings. Certainly some contributors stood out with their experience or particular skills in addressing some things but it seemed like a total effort with synergistic results. I felt blessed to have found this site. I still do.

Hi,  I usually have issues in the warmer months.  The barrier wipes and adhesive remover causes irritation around my stoma.  I found switching products in the summer months help.  Also, if I perspire more because of being out in the sun, I willl definitely have concerns.  When I change my wafer, I try and give myself 15 minutes for my skin to breath without an appliance.  I have a little fan that I stand in front.  My skin goes from bright red to just about normal with no irritation.  Hope this helps.  Good luck!  Sincerely, LadyHope

I had one and the stoma nurse knew instantly that it was time to move into the concave bond on the bags.  It solved it in a week with noticeable difference in 24 hrs.  Until its healed use the wipe, powder, wipe -- and keep it open to the air when possible.   I wish you the best...

Try using compound tincture of benzoin for skin irritation.
