Hi everybody. I had an ileostomy last year in July2016 and was a bit touch and go at the time, spent 103days in hospital after 5 operations. Thankfully I was allowed back to work in April this year 2017 as a engineer. I'm currently away from home on training and was experiencing a bit of pain when poo passing through the ileostomy. I changed my bag and there is bruising around one side of the stoma and abit of a bulge under the skin next to the stoma. Im kinder scared to be honest as away from home. Was just wandering if anyone else has experience of this and if you can advise me on anything please.

Gary,

The pain that you are getting might be due to the nature of your Poo. If it is too bulky because of significant roughage it will cause the stoma to dilate  more than usual and press against the ring of your durahesive or stomahesive (whichever you use). This will also cause some discharge to leak under the adhesive, just enough to cause the bruising that you see and usually a burning sensation. As for the bulge, I am not familiar with this. Is it associated with the bruising? That could happen. If it persists, don't hesitate to have it checked.

Hi,

Not blowing my own trumpet or anything, but I was at the healthiest I had ever been prior to getting UC symptoms. I was eating very healthy and exercising 6/7 days. I'd love to know if any lifestyle factors affect UC, but I suppose I'll have to wait until they figure out what causes it.

I've been trying to occupy myself by being in contact with friends often, but some days I am really not in the mood and find it hard to drag my mind away from what ends up being a mountain of thoughts. I suppose it's all part of the learning process and I'm sure it'll happen less with time. This website has been great so far. It's great to be able to write this sort of stuff down and chat with people that understand what's going on. For that, I thank everyone on this website.

Thanks,

Hamish.

Uh oh. BRUISING? Have it checked. You're away from the UK? Yay!  You might have a better chance at medical response out of the UK.  Frankly, us Americans are shocked by the slowness of medical response in the UK.
