Curious how others in past/present relationships have navigated these surgeries and ostomies with a partner. I have a feeling experiences will be across the board and hopefully some whose experiences haven't been the best up to this point can find encouragement/support in other's stories.

I am asking this question because of the recent phenomenon of being told I am using too many bags by my GP! I suspect it's because of the costs and related to the recent cutbacks due to the austerity thing! See other posts on this site on the subject of people not getting their bags on time.

No wonder people have such misinformed and disrespectful attitudes towards people with ostomies, worsened by ostomates who use the term as well.

I find the use of the word "bag" to describe an ostomy pouch demeaning and disrespectful.

To me, it's my pouch, part of the appliance I wear, a result of life-saving surgery from a debilitating and killer illness, and deserving of more respect.

I haven't seen any threads titled Tips, so I'm starting my own! I have a few tips that can make daily life with an ostomy a bit easier. If you have any, then post them. I'd really like to keep this thread strictly for tips so newcomers can find the information they need.

Not sure if this has been tried before but here is a simple and very cheap way to eliminate odor from a pouch. Buy a small bottle of eucalyptus oil (it usually comes with a drop dispenser on the top). All you need to do is add around 5 or more drops into the bag after emptying. I recently had a colostomy bag (Nov 2012). I lost a lot of  weight (45 lbs). I'm now trying to put on some weight and have a huge appetite. I have a lot of out put in my bag which causes an oder. This question is for ostomates in the US on Medicare using 2-piece systems with sealed pouches. As you know, Medicare will only cover 2 pouches a day (box of 60 pouches for a month). My mom has a recessed stoma which is situated in a crease in her belly. No matter what I have tried, her appliance keeps leaking. I’m using the Hollister barrier rings and it helps but it doesn’t stop the leakage. Has anyone tried the Nu-Hope Non-Adhesive Ostomy or Ileostomy System?  I just ran across the system in The Parthenon Catalogue tonight. My husband has not accepted his ileostomy-after an attempted failed surgery and I don't know that he ever will.  His mood swings between depression and anger he is not very open minded about trying new products.

On my last order I took a better look at all rings on the shelf. There were a lot of them. What I found was Brava rings with a 27 mm hole ref: 12037. Just my size. I always keep a roll with me. It's good for taping edges if you go swimming. It's good for emergencies if you start to spring a leak. It's good for extra adhesion if you are going to get sweaty from exercise or yard work. And it's cheap.

I recently began having severe itching and rash underneath my Ostomy bag. It occurs only at the outer edges where the bag adheres to the skin - not the center portion where I use the paste. I thought I had developed an allergy to the glue used in the adhesive. When I would remove the bag it would have a very red circular rash at the border of the bag.
