First Colonoscopy After Colostomy: What to Expect?

The topic is about preparing for your first colonoscopy after having a colostomy. This can be a bit different from a regular colonoscopy, so here are some helpful tips and insights to make the experience smoother:

1. Use a drainable ostomy pouch during the procedure. This is important because the output can be frequent both during the preparation and right after the procedure.

2. The bowel preparation is usually lighter than what you might have experienced before your colostomy.
- Many people don't need to drink the large-volume purgative solutions.
- Typically, the preparation might involve using one Fleet enema followed by a tap-water enema about two hours before your appointment.

3. Bring a complete spare appliance set with you. This is just in case your current pouching system is compromised during the exam.

4. During the procedure, you will start on your back for anesthesia induction. You might then be rolled to the side so that the stoma is uppermost, making it easier for the scope to access.

5. Be ready to expose your abdomen once you're in the procedure room, so consider wearing clothing that makes this easy.

6. If you have a PICC line, bring your own supplies like saline flush syringes, a heparin syringe, and IV line caps, as endoscopy suites might not have them.

7. Talk to the endoscopist beforehand to understand how much of the bowel will be examined. If they don't plan to scope the entire reachable bowel, ask why and see if a full examination is appropriate for you.

8. Make sure the IV is placed correctly before sedation starts. Incorrect placement can delay anesthesia and cause tissue swelling.

9. After the procedure, eat lightly. Even simple snacks like graham crackers and juice can cause discomfort if you eat them too quickly.
