Cleaning Ostomy Irrigator Sleeves - Need advice on effective solutions

This topic is about finding effective ways to clean a Hollister Ostomy Irrigator Sleeve, particularly to prevent the plastic from sticking together and becoming discolored. Here are some helpful tips and insights:

1. Use plain warm or hot water. Fill the sleeve with water, rub the inside with a flannel or cloth while the water is still in it, and then rinse. Blow-dry the sleeve before storing it to prevent the plastic surfaces from sticking.

2. Try baby-bottle sterilizing tablets, like those from the UK brand Milton. Prepare the solution and let the sleeve soak overnight to help remove stains.

3. Consider using neat (undiluted) household bleach. Pour about half a cup into the sleeve, lay it flat (such as on the shower floor) to coat the inside, and leave it for about an hour. Pour the bleach back into a separate container for reuse, straining through a dry-wipe if particles appear. Rinse the sleeve thoroughly afterward to avoid skin irritation during the next use. Note that bleach may not be suitable for everyone.

4. Dishwashing liquid, such as Dawn, can clean the sleeve but may cause the plastic to yellow and stick. Some users have stopped using it for this reason.

5. For general upkeep, boiling the equipment is possible but usually unnecessary, as it’s unlikely to be perfectly sanitary. Sleeves can last for months and should be replaced only when the plastic becomes badly discolored or degraded. A minimalist routine can be effective: clean with hot water, occasionally use a sterilizing tablet or bleach treatment, and ensure thorough drying.
