How long to wear a compression bandage after surgery?

This topic is about the experience of wearing a compression bandage after having reversal or colostomy surgery. The person who started the discussion has had their staples removed and is now left with steri-strips. They are wearing a Velcro compression bandage but are experiencing intense itching under it, although they feel no pain. The surgeon advised that they would know when it’s time to remove the bandage, but the person is looking for advice from others who have been through similar situations.

Here are some helpful insights and advice shared by others:

1. It might be a good idea to call or visit your surgeon to discuss the itching and lack of pain, and to ask if it’s okay to remove the bandage.

2. People have shared different experiences regarding how long they wore their bandages:
- Some removed it after about a week, especially if it became soiled with blood.
- Others kept it on for around three weeks, but removed it when it became too hot and started interfering with their activities.

3. The general feeling is that if you’re not in pain, the staples are out, and only steri-strips are left, you might not need to keep the bandage on for much longer. However, it’s always best to check with your surgeon. If they give you the go-ahead, you can simply undo the Velcro and take it off.
