Leakage at Pouch-Flange Connection - Seeking Advice

This topic is about dealing with leakage issues at the connection point of the Hollister CeraPlus Tape-Free Flange and its matching two-piece pouch. The person experiencing this problem has been using this system for about seven years due to skin irritation from tape collars. Recently, they noticed stool seeping from the bottom edge where the pouch connects to the flange. Although the leak is minor, it is quite frustrating. They have been using Stomahesive to temporarily stop the seepage and are seeking advice on why this is happening and how to prevent it. They plan to contact Hollister for help but hope to avoid switching systems.

Here are some helpful insights and advice:

1. Contact manufacturers:
- Reach out to Hollister’s product-support line, as they often replace suspect lots.
- Even if you don't plan to switch, consider contacting ConvaTec or Coloplast for technical advice or alternative designs.

2. Rule out a defective batch:
- Some users have experienced issues with isolated couplings not meeting specifications, and manufacturer replacements have resolved the problem.

3. Ensure the coupling is fully engaged:
- Press firmly all around the circumference, then press again to ensure it is locked.
- Use a mirror to check the underside for any visible gaps.
- Run a fingernail between the pouch and flange; if you feel a gap, press again.
- Keep in mind that the Hollister coupling has an arrow-shaped, double-lip seal, so clicks alone may not guarantee a secure fit.

4. Possible mechanical aids:
- If your nails are short or damaged, inspect visually instead of using the “fingernail test.”
- A thin wipe of food-grade silicone spray on a cotton swab around the male side of the coupling may help it snap together more easily. Test this at home first.

5. Consider anatomical or system changes:
- Body shape can change over time; switching to a more flexible system, like Coloplast, or using a convex wafer may help with persistent edge leaks.
- Re-using pouches can stretch the plastic ring, so always test with a new pouch if leaks start.

Products mentioned include the Hollister CeraPlus Tape-Free Flange and matching pouches, Stomahesive from Convatec, and two-piece systems from Convatec and Coloplast.
