Adapting to Life with One Hand and an Ostomy

This topic is about adjusting to life with an ostomy while also temporarily having the use of only one hand. The person sharing their experience is on their second day of this journey and is already making impressive strides in adapting to their new circumstances. Here are some of the things they have managed to do:

1. Changing the ostomy pouch on their own.
2. Opening medication boxes and bottles.
3. Fitting a CPAP mask over long hair and threading the hair through the back opening.
4. Using an ice-cube tray, opening canned food and drink bottles, and cooking meals.
5. Applying Breathe Right Strips.

However, there are still some tasks that remain challenging:

1. Dressing in items that require two hands for pulling or fastening, such as bras, underwear, pants, socks, pantyhose, and compression stockings.
2. Performing blood-sugar checks and blood-pressure readings.

Despite these challenges, the person is feeling encouraged by their daily progress and is amazed at how the body can adapt. Here are some pieces of advice and insights shared by others:

1. Keep a positive, problem-solving attitude and celebrate each small victory. Many people offered words of encouragement.
2. Consider empathy training. One person mentioned they plan to try functioning with one hand for a while to better understand the challenges faced by stroke survivors and ostomates dealing with limited limb use.
