Swimming with a bag - Any tips?

Swimming with an ileostomy can be a joyful experience, especially if you love spending time in the water with your family. If you have a two-piece ileostomy system, you might be concerned about keeping your appliance secure while swimming. Here are some helpful tips and insights to ensure you can enjoy the water with confidence:

1. General Seal & Preparation
- Make sure your wafer is well-adhered and intact. Empty your pouch just before you go swimming.
- To build confidence, try wading into the water gradually the first time.
- If your pouch has a charcoal filter, cover it with the sticky patch provided by the manufacturer to prevent water from entering.

2. Wear Time & Water Type
- Chlorinated pool water usually does not affect the wear time of your wafer.
- Saltwater can sometimes loosen the adhesive, so you might want to change the wafer after swimming in the ocean.

3. Extra Security Options
- Consider framing your wafer with waterproof vinyl tape or using Sure Seal rings to keep the edges dry and extend wear time.
- You can also apply additional skin-safe adhesive or barrier strips for extra security.
- After swimming, blow-dry the wafer to prevent mildew or yeast, and let the pouch air-dry.

4. Alternate Pouch Choices for the Water
- Small "stoma caps" are convenient for short swimming sessions if your output is predictable.
- Some users find that certain brands, like Hollister and Coloplast, perform well in water.
- If you use a Convatec two-piece system, be aware that the vent sticker might wash off, so carry spares.

5. Clothing & Concealment Tips
- A one-piece swimsuit or tankini with ruching can help conceal the pouch outline, even when wet.
- Board shorts or snug swim trunks can keep the pouch flat, and a wetsuit vest or sun shirt can prevent the wafer edge from lifting.

6. Backup & Supplies
- Bring an extra pouch and wafer in your swim bag for peace of mind.
- If you want total sealing, consider products like DryPro waterproof covers.

7. Personal Experiences
- Many people with ostomies report swimming for hours without any leaks.
- If you have sensitive skin, monitor how your skin reacts to frequent water exposure.
- Some swimmers limit their time in the water to prolong the life of their appliance, especially if they are managing costs.

With these tips, you can enjoy swimming and water activities without worrying about your appliance. Many people with ostomies find that with a little preparation, they can dive, surf, or play in the water without any issues.
