Tips for Waterproofing Wafers

This topic is about finding ways to keep the wafer secure and dry while showering or swimming. Many people with ostomies face the challenge of their wafer loosening or lifting when it gets wet, and they are looking for practical solutions to prevent this.

Here are some helpful tips and insights:

1. Many people simply let the wafer get wet during activities like showering, swimming, or even using a hot tub. They then pat it dry or use a blow dryer. Some report getting 4 to 10 days of wear time with products like Hollister New Image, Hollister #8331, Convatec Durahesive, and Convatec 2-piece.

2. It's recommended to wait 24 hours after changing the wafer before submerging it in water. Heat, such as from very hot showers, can be tougher on the adhesive than plain water.

3. If the filter clogs when wet, cover it with the stick-on patches that come with most vented pouches.

4. To prevent the edges from curling, you can tape the perimeter with:
- Nexcare "pink" first-aid tape (available at Walmart for about $3)
- Hypafix tape, which is highly water-resistant and good for sports and sweat
- Scanpore tape, which dries like skin; if unavailable, 3M Micropore is a good alternative

5. For full wafer seals or covers, consider:
- Sure Seal, a clear, flexible ring that overlays the barrier
- Safe Seal, a similar daily cover

6. A commercial shower guard option is the Empower Your Change Ostomy Shower Guard, available on Amazon and reusable until the elastic fails.

7. DIY barrier ideas include:
- Using Glad Press-n-Seal around the wafer before showering and peeling it off afterward
- Wrapping regular plastic cling film or Saran Wrap around the torso
- Cutting a ring-sized hole in a Zip-lock bag and sliding it over the pouch so it hangs free

8. For skin prep and adhesive aids, try:
- Smith & Nephew "No-Sting Skin Prep" to prevent edge-peel and soothe the skin
- Cement Tac, an adhesive cement noted by one user for extra security

9. For added hold during swimming, consider using a StealthBelt neoprene swim belt, available at www.stealthbelt.com.

10. Colostomates might consider irrigation, which eliminates daytime output and makes showering or swimming simpler.

11. If your current wafer lifts easily, request free samples from different manufacturers to find one with stronger integrated tape or hydrophobic adhesive.
