How to manage hair around the stoma?

Managing hair removal around a urostomy or stoma can be a bit tricky, especially if you're concerned about safety and comfort. If you're looking for practical ways to keep hair from growing under the barrier, here are some suggestions from others who have been in your shoes:

1. Disposable Razors
- Many people use inexpensive disposable razors to shave around the base. Some prefer women's razors, as they tend to be gentler on the skin.
- Shaving in the shower or right after a hot bath can help soften the hair and make cleanup easier.
- Consider shaving every time you change your barrier, which for some is about once a week.

2. 5-Blade "Sensitive-Skin" Cartridge Razors
- Some recommended brands include Schick Hydra Sense and Gillette Fusion.
- Use a sensitive-skin shave gel and shave slowly, either up or across the grain. This method can provide long-lasting results since hair in this area grows slowly.

3. Electric Trimming
- A small, rechargeable mustache or beard trimmer, which costs around $20, can help avoid nicks, cuts, and ingrown hairs. This method is often used once a week during appliance changes.

4. Scissors
- Tiny grooming scissors can be used carefully to snip any visible hairs that razors might miss.

5. Tweezers
- Tweezers can be used for isolated hairs right next to the stoma, though some avoid them due to potential pain.

6. Depilatory Creams
- Products like Nair and Veet Hair Removal Cream, including versions for sensitive skin, can dissolve hair below the skin, slowing regrowth.
- Be cautious, as these creams can burn if left on too long. Avoid contact with delicate skin and follow the timing instructions carefully. Use the supplied plastic scraper in the shower for safe removal.

7. Leave It Alone
- If the adhesive still seals well, some people choose not to remove minimal or "peach-fuzz" hair, experiencing no issues with wafer adhesion.

8. General Tips & Reassurance
- Remember, there are no "stupid" questions, and sharing experiences can be very helpful.
- Whatever method you choose, take your time, be careful, and prioritize your comfort and safety.
