Ostomy system not performing as before?

This topic is about a person who has been using the same Convatec ostomy appliance for 27 years with great success, typically getting 5 to 7 days of wear between changes. However, in the past three years, they've noticed a decline in the product's performance, with leaks happening sooner and the wear time decreasing. They are curious if others have experienced similar issues with the product's quality and performance.

Here are some insights and advice shared by others:

1. Many users have noticed that the current Stomahesive and Durahesive wafers are thinner and don't last as long as they used to.

2. If you're handy, consider making your own baseplates. One person has done this for 4–5 years, using Hollister 7730 Medical Adhesive, although this adhesive is being discontinued, so you'll need to find an alternative.

3. Try requesting free samples and testing different brands. Switching brands might help restore the performance you're used to. For example, one person switched from Coloplast to Hollister one-piece #8958 and now changes every 6 days, sometimes weekly. Warming the flange with a hair-dryer and pressing it firmly for about 90 seconds can improve adhesion.

4. Reinforce the flange with external tape. You can encircle all four sides with 3M Tegaderm skin tape. This requires adhesive remover for removal but has helped an active user get back to a 6-day wear time.

5. Consider using supplemental barrier products and strips:
- Coloplast Brava Elastic Barrier Strips, item 120-700, are "C"-shaped and can be applied around the outer edge of the appliance for extra sealing and confidence.
- Coloplast Brava Protective Seal, item 12039 (thin), or Eakin Cohesive Seal, item 839-002 (thick, stretchable) can be used as an O-ring around the stoma before attaching the pouch.

6. Wearing an ostomy belt, approximately 1-inch wide, that clips to the flange and stays on 24/7 can provide constant gentle pressure to help prevent leaks.

7. Consider reaching out directly to manufacturers to express your concerns. Your feedback might influence future product quality.
