Recovering from Colon Cancer Surgery and Weight Concerns

Recovering from colon cancer surgery can be a challenging journey, especially when it comes to managing weight changes and digestive concerns. Here's a look at one person's experience and some helpful advice from others who have been through similar situations.

The person had a permanent colostomy surgery for colon cancer in late November 2021. Before getting sick, they weighed 72 kg, but their weight dropped to 64 kg before the surgery. After the operation, they managed to gain back 3 kg, but their weight gain has since stalled. Their doctor advised them to be cautious about further weight loss, but they are unsure when their weight might return to its previous level and are feeling anxious about the discomforts following surgery.

In February 2022, they experienced a sudden outbreak of facial acne, which was treated with oral antibiotics. After the treatment, they developed persistent loose stools. A second course of antibiotics did not help, and they are planning a follow-up with their surgeon. They are curious if others have faced similar issues related to antibiotics.

Here are some pieces of advice and insights shared by others:

1. Weight can fluctuate for many months after surgery. Some people find that it takes nearly a year for their weight to stabilize.
2. Focus on maintaining a balanced diet and keep an eye on your weight regularly. A steady weight is generally a good sign.
3. Keeping a food journal can be helpful. Try to:
- Identify foods that make your output too thick or too thin.
- Gradually reintroduce foods that were previously troublesome as your body heals.
4. Be mindful of emotional eating, as it can affect your weight. Watch out for comfort-food cravings.
5. Practice portion control and reduce junk food intake. This can help maintain or reduce weight, and some people have also noticed improved blood sugar levels (especially those with type 2 diabetes) after adopting healthier eating habits.
6. If insoluble fiber worsens your output, try to limit high-fiber foods. Instead, focus on easier-to-digest options like eggs, cheese, chicken, rice, and potatoes.
7. While there haven't been any responses yet about antibiotic-related loose stools, consulting with your surgeon is considered a wise step.
