Removing Salts Hydrocolloid Residue Safely?

This topic is about finding a gentle way to remove the sticky residue left by Salts hydrocolloid pouches without harming the skin around a stoma. The person asking for advice has switched to a different device but wants to use up their remaining Salts supply. Here are some helpful tips and insights shared by others:

1. Hollister No Sting Adhesive Remover Wipes are highly recommended for safely dissolving the Salts hydrocolloid without damaging the skin.
- Technique: Start by lifting one corner of the wafer or pouch, insert the wipe into the fold, and press it against the skin to let the solvent work. Then, peel the wafer off gradually.
- After removing the wafer, use a fresh wipe to clean off any leftover paste or adhesive. Wash the area with warm water to remove the solvent before applying the new device.

2. Hollister Adhesive Remover Spray, which uses the same "No Sting" formula, is considered even easier to use than wipes for the initial detachment.
- Method: Begin at the top edge, spray a little, wait a second or two, peel a bit, and repeat the process downwards.
- A can typically lasts about two months if you change your appliance twice a week, or 7–10 days for daily changes.
- It may not always be covered by insurance and costs around $15, but you can request a free sample can from Hollister's website.

3. A combination of the spray and wipes can be effective: use the spray to loosen and remove the pouch, then use wipes to clean any remaining adhesive.

4. A mechanical tip: Instead of pulling the wafer away from the skin, hold the wafer and gently push the skin away. This can significantly reduce skin trauma.

5. Use a skin-protector or barrier wipe before placing the new appliance to help protect the peristomal skin.

6. Keep remover wipes in a travel or "Go" bag for convenience when you're out and about.

7. It's a good idea to consult your stoma nurse about ongoing skin care and to request appropriate remover products.
