Stoma pain and bleeding, need advice

This topic is about someone who has had a stoma for almost six months and is dealing with ongoing pain and bleeding around the stoma site. They don't currently have access to a stoma nurse and are looking for advice on what to do.

Here are some helpful suggestions:

1. Seek immediate professional assessment: It's important to go to the Emergency Room (ER) or Accident & Emergency (A&E) right away, as constant bleeding could be a sign of infection or other complications that need urgent attention.

2. Locate a stoma nurse quickly:
- If you're in London, hospitals usually have stoma-care departments. You can call the hospital switchboard and ask for the stoma nurses’ direct line.
- Your GP surgery can also help by making a direct referral if you explain the urgency of your situation.

3. Contact your surgical team: If you still have follow-up access to the surgeon who performed your operation, reach out to their office. You can email photos of the stoma and request advice, prescriptions, or an appointment with an in-house stoma nurse.

4. Act promptly on infection signs: If you experience pain, irritation, bleeding, fever, or just have a feeling that something is wrong, seek medical review immediately. Delaying could lead to severe infection or sepsis.

5. Be ready to self-advocate: Prepare a written summary of your surgical history, medications, complications, and important dates. This will help you provide accurate information quickly in any clinical setting.

6. Consider the products you're using: One person suggested sharing information about the products you use, as this might help professionals or peers identify if your appliance or skin-barrier choice is contributing to the problem.
