Colostomy Constipation - Excessive Pressure and Windiness - Any Advice?

This topic is about someone who recently had a colostomy and is dealing with some challenges like minimal output, pressure, and windiness. They are also using Laxido, a laxative, to help with their condition. Here are some helpful insights and advice shared by others:

1. Consider if daily laxatives are necessary. Some people suggest that if the output is already liquid, the bowel might be empty, and continuing with laxatives could keep the output minimal.

2. Understand that minimal or sporadic output can be normal in the first week or two after surgery as the bowel adjusts. Excessive medication might not be beneficial during this period.

3. Support your gut health and adjust your diet:
- Try having a nightly serving of sauerkraut with a spinach salad for a few months. This can help nourish the good bacteria in your gut and improve stool consistency.
- Drink water slowly throughout the day, about 3-4 glasses, to stay hydrated without losing nutrients.
- If you still need a laxative, some find that Miralax works well once the gut flora is supported.

4. Engage in regular physical activity, like walking, to help stimulate bowel movements and relieve pressure and gas.

5. Keep in touch with healthcare professionals. If you continue to experience low output and discomfort, it’s important to consult with a stoma nurse or surgeon. They can help determine if an ileostomy might be a better option than relying on laxatives long-term.
