Alternative options for ostomy bag attachment for adhesive allergies?

This topic is all about finding alternative ways to keep an ostomy pouch in place without causing skin irritation, especially for those who have severe adhesive allergies. If you're struggling with reactions to traditional adhesives, here are some helpful tips and insights:

1. **Patch-test first**: Before using any new adhesive or barrier near your stoma, test it on another part of your body to ensure you don't have a reaction.

2. **Create a protective “base layer” before applying the wafer**:
- Use micropore paper tape in various widths.
- Try a Duoderm thin hydrocolloid sheet, but sample it first to ensure compatibility.
- Consider Surgi-pore hypoallergenic tape.
- Use “artificial skin” products from the film industry or Bayer Germolene New-Skin liquid plaster, but avoid using them on broken skin.

3. **Use separate medical adhesives or tapes instead of built-in wafer adhesive**:
- Although the Hollister 7730 Medical Adhesive Spray is discontinued, you can look for alternatives like:
- Torbot Product 375
- Nu-Hope Adhesive
- Urocare Adhesive #500503
- Manfred Sauer Original Skin Latex Adhesive series
- Prosthetic Solutions Zeflosil Silicone Adhesive
- Salts Healthcare Latex Adhesive Solution
- Technovent G626 Probond Secure Adhesive
- Try 2.5-inch double-sided Korean tape “Sookwang”.
- Use double-sided carpet tape from DIY stores to create a custom base-plate.

4. **Consider alternative sealing/leveling rings or strips**:
- Ainscorp Aloe Rings
- Dansac TRE Seal

5. **Switch pouching system**:
- Cymed Pouching Systems with MicroSkin offer a very thin, breathable barrier.
- Convatec two-piece systems are reported by multiple users to cause less irritation than Hollister.

6. **Medication-assisted prep**:
- Use Flonase (fluticasone) nasal spray by spraying it onto your fingers, rubbing it around the peristomal skin, drying with a hair dryer on low, and then applying your normal barrier and pouch. This topical steroid can help calm allergic inflammation.

7. **Practical tips**:
- Keep one thumbnail slightly long to easily punch a smooth stoma hole in any wafer.

These suggestions aim to help you find a more comfortable and less irritating way to manage your ostomy pouch.
