Emptying Closed Hollister Pouches - Anyone Else?

This topic is about finding the best type of ostomy pouch for someone who currently uses closed-end Hollister pouches. They find these pouches a bit inconvenient because they don't like carrying much output and find standard drainable pouches too long for their shorter height. They sometimes empty the closed pouches instead of replacing them, which can mean using 8-10 new pouches a day. Additionally, they are bothered by a persistent chemical odor from the pouch filter. They are seeking advice on whether others empty closed Hollister bags or have found a better solution.

Here are some helpful suggestions:

1. Consider trying smaller or kid-size drainable pouches. Many brands offer these, and their reduced length might be more comfortable than standard adult drainable pouches.

2. Think about switching from closed to drainable pouches in general. Drainable pouches are designed to be emptied easily, which could eliminate the need to change bags multiple times a day.

3. Request free samples of shorter drainable models, such as Convatec Natura shorter pouches, to test how they fit, their length, and how they feel under clothing.

4. If a drainable pouch still feels too long, you can try the "tuck-and-roll" method. Roll the tail up one extra turn and secure it with a small binder or file clip. This keeps the clip hidden and adjusts the pouch to a custom length.

5. Some users report that they do not notice any filter odor with drainable pouches, which might help resolve the issue of the chemical smell.
