Bleeding Stoma - Seeking Advice

This topic is about dealing with bleeding from a stoma, which can be a bit unsettling for those who experience it. The person sharing their experience uses a two-piece pouching system and sometimes notices bleeding when removing the bag. They also see small spots on the stoma that ooze blood even when the pouch is off and the stoma is untouched. Although it doesn't hurt, they are curious if others have similar experiences and how they manage it.

Here are some helpful insights and advice:

1. Minor bleeding from the stoma is quite common. The tissue is delicate and can be easily irritated, but in most cases, the bleeding stops quickly on its own or with gentle pressure.

2. Many people with ostomies notice bleeding when cleaning or drying the area, or when removing or attaching the appliance, especially at the base where the stoma meets the skin.

3. It's important to distinguish between true stoma bleeding and irritation of the skin around the stoma. Understanding the source can help determine if any changes in care routine are needed.

4. Some people have found that using a thin barrier shield, which is a protective film applied to the wafer or directly to the pouch, can eliminate pinpoint bleeding, especially if the issue is with the sensitive skin around the stoma.

5. If the skin around the stoma is raw or irritated, applying stoma powder can sting. Protecting the area first with a barrier film may reduce discomfort and aid in healing.
