Showering without wetting bag/flange?

Showering with an ostomy can be a bit of a puzzle, especially if you're trying to keep your ostomy bag or flange dry. If you're looking for some tips and tricks, here are a few ideas that might help:

1. Commercial shower covers:
- Consider using products like the "Ostomy Shower Guard" from Empower Your Change. Many people find it effective in keeping most of the water off the bag and wafer, with only minor leakage reported.

2. DIY covers and wraps:
- Some people use Press’n Seal, Saran Wrap, or freezer bags secured with waterproof tape. However, these can be a bit tricky to manage.
- A creative solution is to use a Seal-a-Meal machine to make a reusable "shower cap" pouch from an old ostomy pouch.
- Another method is to tape the bag up out of the spray and then double-wrap it with Press’n Seal.

3. Waterproof tapes and barrier add-ons:
- Products like 3M Micropore tape, 3M Transpore waterproof tape, and Coloplast Brava strips can be used around the wafer edge for extra security during long showers or swimming.
- For those with adhesion issues, layering products like Cavilon No-Sting barrier spray, barrier rings, and protective sheets can help, along with covering the area with a freezer bag while showering.

4. Simply let it get wet:
- Many modern ostomy systems, like those from Hollister and Coloplast, are designed to handle water. You can shower or swim with the appliance on and then either pat it dry with a towel or use a hairdryer on low/warm to dry the cloth backing.
- It's important to ensure the skin and wafer are completely dry only when applying a new appliance. Once it's adhered, water exposure is generally not a problem.

5. Showering with no bag or appliance:
- On days when you change your appliance, you might choose to shower without the pouch or even without the entire appliance. Eating lightly the night before and directing any output down the drain can make this easier.
- Gentle soaps like baby shampoo, Dial, or Head & Shoulders (non-moisturizing) are often recommended, and it's best to avoid high-pressure spray directly on the stoma.

6. Specialized or other options:
- Some people use a "little bag for swimming," which is a small, swim-specific pouch.
- Waterproof paper tape, Brava elastic strips, or picture-framing with regular paper tape can help keep wafer edges from lifting.

Overall, many find that showering with the appliance exposed and then drying it off is the simplest and most effective method, unless there are specific adhesion issues.
