Swollen Stoma: Seeking Advice and Support

This topic is about dealing with a sudden enlargement of a stoma, which can understandably cause anxiety. Here’s a simple guide to help manage such situations:

- If you experience pain or any abdominal discomfort, it’s important to seek medical help right away.

- Sometimes, temporary swelling can be managed by:
1. Cutting a larger opening in the wafer or baseplate to ensure it doesn’t constrict the stoma.
2. Sprinkling granulated sugar directly on the swollen stoma. This can help draw out fluid and reduce swelling, and it’s safe for the stoma tissue.

- It’s helpful to determine if the issue is a prolapse or a blockage:
1. A prolapse, where the stoma protrudes more than usual, usually still allows for normal output. Applying sugar can often help reduce the swelling.
2. A blockage might result in little or no output, and in this case, sugar won’t be effective.

- If you suspect a blockage and notice reduced output, try the following:
1. Drink a bottle of regular (not sugar-free) Coke or another high-sugar liquid.
2. Lie down, relax, and gently massage or press around the stoma area.
3. If there’s no improvement, try walking around for a bit.
4. If the situation doesn’t improve after these steps, it’s best to go to the emergency room.
