Ostomy Memories of Staying Hydrated

This topic is about the importance of staying hydrated when living with an ostomy, based on experiences from someone who has managed this since 1964. Over the years, they learned the hard way about the critical need for regular fluid intake to prevent health issues like kidney damage. Here are some helpful insights and advice on staying hydrated:

1. The person now drinks four 23.7-ounce bottles of filtered water daily and sometimes needs hospital IVs for dehydration. They have two essential rules before leaving home: empty the bladder and carry a water bottle.

2. It's important to know that hydration needs are often higher than we think. Many people were already dehydrated before having an ostomy.

3. Make a conscious effort to drink fluids throughout the day, even when it's cold and you might not feel as thirsty.

4. At work, try to keep a water bottle nearby and discuss with your employer the possibility of taking breaks to drink and use the restroom as needed.

5. Consider the "eat your hydration" approach by including a daily fiber-rich green smoothie and foods high in potassium and magnesium, like bananas, tomatoes, and avocados. These foods help provide the electrolytes necessary for maintaining proper fluid balance.
