Intestine Sticking Out - Is This Normal?

This topic is about a person who is concerned about their stoma, which has changed from being mostly flush with the skin to protruding more than before. They describe it as looking like a "worm from Dune" and are unsure if this is a normal change or something to worry about. Although the stoma appears healthy, the change in appearance is unsettling for them.

Here are some helpful insights and advice:

1. If you notice any sudden or significant changes in your stoma, such as in size, color, or function, it's important to contact a stoma nurse or surgeon. They can provide reassurance or necessary intervention.

2. Temporary swelling of the stoma can happen due to food allergies, minor blockages, or as the stoma "settles" during the first few months. While these issues often resolve on their own, it's still a good idea to seek professional advice.

3. Many healthy stomas naturally protrude about 1 inch (approximately 2.5 cm). Having a moderate "outie" stoma can actually be beneficial, as it may help appliances seal better compared to a flush stoma.

4. Hospital staff often advise against "toughing it out." Even if your concerns seem small, it's important to have them evaluated promptly. This can provide peace of mind and help rule out issues like prolapse or obstruction.

5. If a blockage occurs, the stoma might enlarge slightly. Surgeons usually confirm that it is still safe once the blockage clears.
