Sinus Complication Near Stoma: Seeking Advice and Experiences

This topic is about dealing with a sinus complication near an ileostomy stoma. The person experiencing this issue has a history of sinus problems around a mesh used for hernia control. A new sinus has developed, causing leaks and discomfort, and they are seeking advice on how to manage the situation, especially with upcoming university exams. Here are some helpful suggestions:

1. Keep an eye out for any serious symptoms like fever, dizziness, or increasing pain. If these occur, it's important to go to the Emergency Room immediately (dial 000 in Australia or 911 in the USA/Canada).

2. Try to see a local general practitioner (GP) as soon as possible. It might be easier to get an appointment with a GP than with a stomal therapist, and they can start treatment or refer you to a specialist.

3. If you end up going to the hospital's Emergency Room, ask them to contact a stomal therapist for you if you can't get an outpatient appointment.

4. Consider using a specific type of dressing, like the thick plastic-like gauze from Coloplast, which sticks well and can protect the sinus from leaks while absorbing any discharge.

5. Talk to a Wound-Ostomy-Continence (WOC) nurse about a special beeswax-based dressing that can help with healing, especially when the area can't be stitched up.

6. Continue to gently clean the area during showers, but make sure to change the sterile packing often to help control any infection until you can get professional care.
