Seeking Understanding and Connection with a Colostomy

Living with a life-long colostomy can be challenging, especially when it comes to forming relationships and seeking understanding from others. The person sharing their story has had a colostomy since birth and has faced ridicule during school years, which has led to a deep mistrust and hesitation to disclose their condition. This has made dating difficult, with past relationships ending due to various reasons, including one partner identifying as gay and another's heavy drinking. They are looking to connect with people who understand what it's like to live with an ostomy and hope to build relationships without the fear that sharing their condition will end them. Adding to their challenges, they have recently been diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis, a type of arthritis affecting the spine.

Here are some pieces of advice and insights shared by others:

1. Many people offer personal support and invite the person to email or chat privately, highlighting the importance of talking with others who have ostomies to reduce feelings of isolation.

2. There is encouragement to stay engaged with the ostomy community, share experiences, and seek friendships or potential relationships with people who already understand the challenges of living with an ostomy.
