Post-Hernia Surgery Complications and Stoma Bag Issues

This topic is about dealing with leaks from an ostomy appliance after a hernia repair surgery. The person had two major surgeries, and now their stoma sits in a skin fold, causing leaks with their current ostomy setup. They are looking for practical solutions to stop these leaks. Here are some helpful suggestions:

1. Try using mouldable seal rings around the stoma to fill any gaps. Salts SecuPlast Mouldable Seals (thin version) are recommended, and you can request free samples from the company.

2. Break seal rings into smaller pieces and layer them to fill the skin pleat. It's a good idea to get guidance from a stoma nurse, especially since the surgery was recent.

3. Add flange extenders around the wafer to create an extra barrier, preventing output from escaping.

4. Consider switching to a system that adapts to skin folds, like the ConvaTec Natura Stomahesive Moldable Flange, used with Eakin Barrier Rings, which are non-stinging.

5. For those with a similar body shape, shallow convex options like Coloplast Sensura Shallow Convex might work. While deep convex options may seal better, they can be harsh on the skin if too aggressive.

6. If the current convexity isn't enough, think about using a stoma collar or trying different convex depths. Keep an eye on your skin for any signs of ulcers.

7. If changing appliances doesn't solve the issue, consider returning to the original ostomy surgeon or consulting a stoma nurse. They can assess whether the stoma position or abdominal fold might need further surgical or prosthetic adjustments.
