Swimming with an Ostomy - Tips for Keeping Your Flange Secure

Swimming with an ostomy can be a bit challenging, especially when it comes to keeping your flange secure in the water. If you're someone who loves swimming but worries about leaks or frequent changes, here are some helpful tips and insights to make your experience more enjoyable:

- Consider using barriers with highly water-resistant, cloth-like tape instead of paper tape. Older styles with paper tape often don't hold up well when wet.

- Some people have had success with the Hollister Premier Flextend Convex system, which reportedly offers a 7-day wear time. Users have been able to swim, use hot tubs, and shower without needing to change their appliance early.

- The Coloplast SenSura system, specifically flange 10015 and pouch 11124, is another option. It features a rubber-like outer layer that is effectively waterproof, eliminating the need for extra tape. The lock/unlock coupling also allows you to rotate the pouch, which can be handy if you use a Stealth Belt.

- For those using the Hollister New Image system, flange 15203 with pouch 18373 works well in the shower when properly sealed. If you're heading to the pool, consider switching to a non-vented pouch on the same flange to prevent water from entering.

- General tips include ensuring that your barrier is fully adhered and sealed before entering the water. Modern cloth-taped barriers are designed to withstand daily showers and swimming, so you might not need additional waterproof tape.

These suggestions might help you enjoy swimming with more confidence and less worry about your ostomy appliance.
