When I first had an ostomy

This topic is about the mixed emotions someone might feel when they first get an ostomy. It's a journey that starts with relief from serious health issues but quickly becomes a mix of other feelings. Here's a look at what this experience can be like and some advice for navigating it:

- Initially, there might be a sense of relief because the surgery addresses life-threatening problems. However, this relief can soon be joined by feelings of shock and doubt.
- Seeing the stoma for the first time can be unsettling, and it might lead to a loss of confidence.
- Over time, these fears can lessen, and acceptance can grow. It's important to recognize the necessity and benefits of the surgery, even though it can be psychologically challenging.
- Sharing experiences, like through writing poems, can be a helpful way to process emotions. It can also provide support to others who are going through similar experiences.
- It's okay to choose not to dwell on feelings of deep depression, anger, or resentment. Protecting your mental health is important, and sharing positive or neutral experiences can be beneficial for both you and others.
- Encouragement from others can be very supportive. Continuing to share your journey can help you and the community, as an ostomy is indeed a significant life change.
