Hernia surgery1

This topic is about managing leaks and skin irritation around a colostomy after hernia surgery. The person has had a colostomy for 17 years, and after the surgery, their stoma, which used to protrude, is now flat. This change has led to frequent leaks and skin irritation, causing them to change their appliance every 1 to 2 days. They are looking for advice to help with these issues.

Here are some helpful suggestions:

1. For the raw, weepy skin at the base of the stoma:
- Make sure to thoroughly dry the skin around the stoma.
- Use a Q-tip to gently apply a small amount of ostomy paste directly onto the irritated area.
- Cut a piece of a barrier ring and place it over the treated spot to provide extra protection.
- Secure everything by applying the wafer or flange on top. This combination can help reduce leaks and protect the sore skin.
