Why Does My Ileostomy Smell Worse After Sleeping?

This topic is about dealing with stronger odors from an ileostomy pouch, especially noticeable in the morning. The person experiencing this is concerned about the smell affecting their neighbors and is looking for effective ways to manage it. Here are some helpful tips and insights:

1. Ventilate and flush while emptying:
- Use the bathroom fan and flush the toilet during and after emptying the pouch to help reduce odors.

2. Neutralize odor in the toilet air:
- Use a before-you-go spray like Poo-Pourri to trap odors in the toilet bowl.
- Pour a cup of white vinegar into the bowl for a minute before flushing to help neutralize smells.

3. Room and fabric deodorizers:
- Try Zorb-X or Coloplast Brava Odour Neutralizing Spray to eliminate odors in the room.
- Standard unscented air fresheners, Lysol, or a fan can also be useful.

4. Inside-the-pouch odor control:
- Use Hollister M9 Odor Eliminator Drops or Safe n Simple Odor Eliminator Drops in the pouch.
- Place a peppermint or spearmint sweet in the pouch as a simple deodorizer.
- Add a few drops of vinegar directly into the pouch.
- Keep the pouch well-vented to prevent gas build-up.

5. Cleaning the pouch tail:
- Wipe the outlet with a plain damp paper towel after each emptying to avoid loosening the seal.

6. Prevent leaks that spread odor:
- If Velcro-tail pouches leak, switch to a clip-style pouch or add a tail cover.
- Check for micro-leaks and change appliances sooner if needed.

7. Laundry and fabrics:
- Wash clothes, bedding, and pouch wraps frequently to prevent odors from clinging.
- Use a dedicated hamper with a lid for soiled items.

8. Travel/away-from-home kits:
- Carry a small bottle of M9 or Safe n Simple drops, a travel-size Coloplast spray, extra strong mints, and a miniature air freshener.

9. If odor persists despite controls:
- Evaluate your diet, as some foods can increase odor.
- Consider using pouch filters or a two-piece system with a vent.
- Empty the pouch once during the night if necessary to reduce gas build-up.

10. Dealing with hostile neighbors:
- Document any incidents and involve the landlord if necessary, but remember that the odor can be managed effectively with the right products and techniques.
