Did I Just Poop After Colostomy Reversal?

This topic is about what to expect after having a colostomy reversal and now living with a temporary loop ileostomy. It can be a bit surprising when things don't go as expected, especially when it comes to passing stool from the rectum. Here's some helpful advice and insights to guide you through this experience:

1. With a loop ileostomy, there are two openings in the stoma. While most of the intestinal content exits into the pouch, some can flow through the inactive limb and leave via the rectum. Passing actual stool occasionally is normal, and some people experience this once or twice a week.

2. Use these occurrences as an opportunity to practice and strengthen your pelvic floor and anal sphincter muscles. This will be beneficial when your intestinal continuity is fully restored.

3. The first time this happens, it can be quite surprising. Many people reach out to their nurse or take photos for confirmation. Don't hesitate to seek professional reassurance if you're unsure.

4. The small, lower opening on the stoma can also release mucus or liquid output unexpectedly, especially on days when you're not feeling well. Be cautious when changing your appliance.

5. If you experience pain, unusual frequency, or any other concerning symptoms, or if you just want peace of mind, contact your surgeon or stoma nurse.

6. Even after you settle into a routine, your peristomal skin might occasionally flare up. Addressing these issues promptly can help keep things manageable.
