NEVER EVER had a leak

The topic at hand is about managing and preventing leaks from ostomy appliances, and whether living completely leak-free is truly possible. Here are some helpful tips and insights shared by others who have faced similar challenges:

1. **Consult with a Stoma/Ostomy Nurse**
- A specialized nurse can assess the contours around your stoma, recommend the right products (whether flat, convex, or concave), and help address most causes of leaks.

2. **Product Recommendations**
- Many have found success with Hollister one-piece and two-piece systems, reporting minimal leaks over several years.
- Using a one-piece drainable pouch with Hollister Adapt paste under the wafer can extend wear time to 5-8 days, with leaks occurring only if worn too long.
- Concave flanges from brands like Hollister, Coloplast, and ConvaTec are noted for their reliability, and these companies often provide free samples and support.
- Applying a large border with additional barrier rings and strips around the stoma can prevent leaks, even when the bag is very full.

3. **Improving Wafer Adhesion**
- Warm the wafer or barrier before and after applying it. You can cup it with your hands or use a hair dryer for 20-30 seconds, then press it on firmly.
- Apply the appliance while in a position that flattens the skin, such as slightly reclined in bed or sitting if standing causes skin folds.

4. **Handling Uneven Skin or Depressions**
- Consider using convex or concave flanges, barrier rings, pastes, or strip paste to fill in any dips.
- Ensure the area is completely clean and dry, avoiding excess powders or layers that might hinder adhesion.

5. **Recognizing and Responding to Leaks**
- Leaks can be categorized as small, medium, or large, with the first sign often being an odor. Change the appliance promptly at the first hint of a smell to prevent a full blow-out.

6. **Managing Output and Reducing Leaks**
- Adding a few drops of baby oil to the top of the pouch can help output slide to the bottom, making it easier to empty and reducing leaks.
- A thicker output, possibly achieved with a higher-carb diet for those with ileostomies, can also help lessen leaks.
- Empty the pouch before bedtime and avoid overfilling it during heavy activity.

7. **General Encouragement**
- If your current system is leaking, don't hesitate to request multiple samples and keep experimenting until you find what works best for you.
- Some long-term users have experienced over 10 years without any leaks once they found the right products and techniques.

Remember, it's all about finding the right combination of products and techniques that work for you. Keep trying different options until you find your perfect fit.
