High Stoma Output After Surgery - Seeking Advice and Support

This topic is about managing high output from a new ileostomy after undergoing J-pouch construction, rectum removal, and gallbladder removal. The person is experiencing a significant increase in stoma output, which is causing concern and discomfort. Here are some helpful tips and insights for managing this situation:

1. Consider foods that can help thicken or slow down the output, such as pumpkin, butternut squash, potatoes, and marshmallows.

2. Be aware that a stoma located higher in the small bowel may produce output that is more liquid and caustic.

3. Limit intake of milk products and very fibrous foods, especially if you are lactose-intolerant, as these can increase output volume and cause skin irritation.

4. Stay hydrated by drinking electrolyte-containing sports drinks instead of plain water to maintain proper hydration levels.

5. Use an over-the-counter bulking agent like Metamucil (psyllium) sparingly to help manage output.

6. Discuss with your doctor the possibility of using a prescription medication like cholestyramine, which may help reduce diarrhea and stoma output after gallbladder removal.

7. Regularly consult with healthcare providers to adjust your medication, hydration, and diet as needed.

8. If your ileostomy is temporary, keep in mind that a future colostomy or planned stoma closure might result in less frequent emptying.
