Low Magnesium Problem

This topic is about managing low magnesium levels after having an ileostomy, which is a surgical procedure that creates an opening in the abdomen to allow waste to exit the body. The person sharing their experience had this surgery in March 2023 and is now dealing with consistently low magnesium levels and high stoma output. They are currently taking magnesium-oxide tablets and receiving magnesium infusions but are concerned about relying on these infusions long-term. They are seeking advice on whether a different form of magnesium might be better absorbed and are interested in hearing from others with similar experiences.

Here are some helpful insights and advice shared by others:

1. Crushed magnesium tablets might not be well absorbed in people with an ileostomy. Some have found that switching to a liquid form of magnesium improved their levels.

2. A specific product that has been recommended is ReMag Liquid Magnesium. Users dilute it in 1–2 liters of water and sip it throughout the day for better absorption.

3. Other general liquid magnesium supplements have also helped some people move their magnesium levels from low to borderline-normal.

4. It's important to have regular follow-ups with a gastroenterologist and consider seeing a dietitian who understands high-output ostomies to help manage fluid and electrolyte balance.

5. Medications that affect stomach acidity, like proton-pump inhibitors, can impact magnesium absorption. Some people have noticed improvements in absorption and reduced stoma output after switching from Omeprazole to an H2-blocker like Pepcid.
