Leaks from Stoma Mucous? Need Advice!

This topic is about dealing with leaks around a stoma, specifically where the skin meets the stoma tissue. The person experiencing this issue suspects that mucus from the stoma is causing the barrier ring to lift, leading to frequent leaks and the need for daily appliance changes. They are seeking advice on how to maintain a secure seal despite the moisture.

Here are some helpful suggestions:

1. Check if the "mucus" is actually dissolved barrier material:
- Use a clear pouch to observe the edge of the wafer or ring.
- If the barrier ring loses contact, it may turn white and fall into the bag, resembling mucus.
- Change the setup when you notice the white edge approaching the wafer.

2. Maintain a hygiene and bag-care routine to reduce leaks:
- Change the entire system every other day.
- On change days, shower without the bag and clean the abdomen thoroughly.
- Each time you empty the pouch, rinse it with water and add a few drops of baby oil, spreading it around the inside to prevent output from sticking.

3. Thicken the output to be gentler on the seal:
- Consider adding a daily fiber supplement like Psyllium Fiber Sugar-Free Powder, which is similar to Metamucil.
- Combining fiber with the baby oil coating can create a thicker, easier-to-drain output that is less likely to affect the adhesive.

4. Make adjustments to the appliance:
- Try using a convex wafer, as some people have found it helps prevent seepage where flat wafers do not.

5. Seek professional help and support:
- Contact a stoma nurse or your surgeon to evaluate the mucus issue, confirm the fit of the wafer, and recommend suitable products.
- If local ostomy services are limited, consider joining or starting an ostomy support group and advocating for better access to care with healthcare providers or community representatives.
