Loop Ileostomy Question

This topic is about managing a reversible loop ileostomy, which is a type of stoma where two openings are visible. The person is concerned about preventing stool from passing into the large bowel and is considering trimming the wafer to cover the non-functioning opening. Here are some helpful insights:

1. In a loop ileostomy, both openings you see are parts of the small intestine.

2. The proximal hole is the one that expels fecal output, which is the main function of the ileostomy.

3. The distal hole is responsible for expelling naturally produced mucus. This is normal and expected.

4. Since the large intestine is not connected to the fecal stream in this setup, stool should not enter it. Only mucus exits through the distal limb.

5. Sealing the distal limb is not necessary and could actually cause issues by trapping mucus, which needs to be expelled naturally.
