4-Inch Barrier Rings for Leakage Problems - Any Experience?

The topic at hand is about using 4-inch barrier rings to address persistent leakage issues for those with an ostomy. The original poster has received some samples of these large barrier rings and is curious if they might help with their leakage problems. Here are some helpful tips and insights shared by others:

1. Give the samples you have a try. Leakage solutions can vary greatly from person to person. Most ostomy suppliers are willing to send additional free samples if you ask, so you can experiment with different brands and sizes without any cost.

2. Some people create their own baseplates and use Probond prosthetic adhesive to attach them. They then stick the commercial wafer to this baseplate, which can significantly improve how long the setup lasts and how well it sticks.

3. Instead of stretching the 4-inch ring, try cutting a hole in it that matches the size of your stoma. This method works well for some users and doesn't cause any issues.

4. Before trying new products or techniques, take a moment to understand why you're experiencing leaks. Consider factors like skin contour, hernia, or stoma shape to help you choose the most suitable solutions.

5. One routine that works for a user with a 2-piece Convatec system involves cleansing the skin, applying 3M Cavilon No Sting Barrier Film Spray, and then attaching the wafer. They change it every 3 days.

6. Barrier rings can offer extra security towards the end of a wafer’s wear cycle. One user applies a ring when the wafer is 5–6 days old to prevent unexpected leaks.

7. If your stoma has an uneven edge or a "divot," you can fold or double the ring in that spot to fill the gap. A stoma nurse can show you how to do this. One person with a large hernia reports getting more than 2 leak-free days using this method.

8. It's always a good idea to consult your stoma nurse for personalized fitting advice, especially if you have a hernia or an irregular stoma profile.
