I Miss Tucking in My Shirt - Seeking Clothing Advice for Ostomates

This topic is about finding ways for men with an ileostomy to tuck in their shirts without creating a noticeable bulge or obstructing the pouch. The person sharing their experience had surgery in May 2023 and usually wears untucked shirts with a slim tank underneath and homemade pouch covers. They are looking for solutions, especially for formal occasions, and are open to new ideas as they continue to recover.

Here are some suggestions and insights shared by others:

1. Embrace the untucked look:
- Many have found comfort in wearing untucked polos, casual button-ups, or shirts designed to be worn untucked, which helps avoid any concerns about bulges.

2. Use layering or cover garments:
- Consider wearing a vest, sweater vest, waistcoat, or a loose sport coat over a tucked dress shirt for formal events to conceal any bulge.
- Try the two-shirt method: wear a slim tank or T-shirt tucked in with a hole cut for the flange/pouch, then layer a longer untucked shirt over it.

3. Opt for suspenders instead of belts:
- Suspenders can keep trousers up while allowing the pouch to hang freely. Pair them with a tummy sleeve from a maternity shop for a smooth appearance.

4. Explore specialty belts and guards:
- A horizontal wrap can keep the pouch flat, especially when emptied frequently.
- Some belts with a prolapse flap can flatten the area, though they may be bulky.
- Hernia belts or belts with a mounting plate can allow the bag to lie sideways below the belt line.
- Custom rigid guards or pot-belly shields can keep the bag clear for tucking, though they may create a "pot-belly" look.

5. Shorten or reposition the pouch:
- Use a clip or binder clip with a magnet to fold the bottom of the pouch, making it shorter and easier to conceal.
- Rolling socks on either side of the pouch under the belt can prop the bag opening above the belt, maintaining drainage while keeping the front flat.

6. Consider a rotatable 2-piece system:
- Some systems allow the pouch to be worn horizontally or at an angle, clearing the belt area. Pairing with a wide hernia belt or wrap can provide support.

7. Make clothing alterations:
- Hem dress shirts to just below pouch height for a tailored look when worn untucked.
- Purchase or have longer pull-over shirts made to be worn out.
- Cut a slot in tank tops for the flange to sit through, keeping the tank tucked while the pouch hangs outside.
- Add custom embroidery or personal touches to draw attention away from the midsection.

8. Other helpful tips:
- Keep the pouch emptied regularly, as any guard or flattening method works better with low output volume.
- Don't hesitate to try different products, as ostomy technology and accessories continue to evolve.
