Silver Alginate for Treating Raw Skin Around a Stoma

The topic at hand is about using silver alginate dressings for raw, irritated skin around a stoma. A new member is curious if anyone has tried this and whether it affects the seal of the ostomy pouching system, as well as how long it takes for the skin to heal.

Here are some insights and advice shared by others:

1. Form and suitability of silver alginate:
- Silver alginate dressings typically come as a cloth or foam sheet that turns into a jelly-like mass when it absorbs fluid. Many members are skeptical about how this material could allow an ostomy wafer to stick properly, so they do not recommend it for peristomal skin.
- Some members have had great success using silver alginate for deep surgical or wound cavities, such as closing an abdominal hole in about three weeks or packing it into a rectal wound. However, they strongly advise against using it around a stoma.

2. Alternative approaches for sore peristomal skin:
- Consider using a skin-prep barrier spray or barrier wipes before applying the wafer to protect raw skin.
- Address potential causes like pancaking. One member suggests using Brava Lubricating Deodorant inside the pouch to help the output slide off the stoma and reduce irritation from contact.

3. Symptomatic pain relief:
- A 5% lidocaine cream or ointment, available on Amazon as a hemorrhoid cream, can numb the area within 15–20 minutes, making cleaning and appliance changes more tolerable. Use it sparingly and keep an eye on the skin, as numbing can hide ongoing damage.

4. Cautions:
- Many posters advise against using silver alginate directly under an ostomy wafer because it is not designed for that purpose, and its gelatinous residue can interfere with adhesion.
- Always consult a stoma nurse or physician before trying products meant for wound packing or topical anesthesia.
