Travel

Planning a trip to Scotland for a couple of weeks is exciting, especially if it's your first flight since having ileostomy surgery. Here are some friendly tips to help you prepare and make your journey as smooth as possible:

- Ostomy Supplies:
- Pack at least twice the number of pouches, barriers, rings, wipes, and other supplies you would typically use for 2-3 weeks. If you have the space, consider packing three times the amount.
- Keep all your supplies in your carry-on bag to ensure they are with you at all times and not lost in checked luggage.

- Before Boarding:
- Make sure to empty your pouch right before you board the plane.
- Add a few drops of an odor eliminator like Hollister M9 to your pouch to help manage any odors if you need to empty it during the flight.

- During the Flight:
- Decide whether to eat lightly or have a normal meal. Some people find that skipping meals can lead to more gas.
- Stay hydrated by drinking as you normally would to prevent dehydration.
- Choose an aisle seat or one near the lavatory for easier access to the bathroom.
- Ask for a pillow to place between your seat belt and pouch for added comfort and protection.
- Airplane lavatories are small, so plan your bathroom visits accordingly.

- Security and Documentation:
- Inform TSA or airport security about your ostomy before going through a body scanner to avoid any surprises. You don't need to mention it if you're only going through a metal detector.
- Be prepared for a possible discreet pat-down, as procedures can vary by country. Travelers have reported no major issues at Edinburgh or Heathrow airports.
- Carry an Ostomy Travel Card, which you can download online. This card explains your medical device and can help speed up conversations with security staff.

- Luggage and Hernia Prevention:
- Avoid lifting or carrying very heavy bags, as excessive strain can increase the risk of developing a parastomal hernia.

- Mindset:
- Remember that flying with an ostomy can be routine once you're prepared. Relax and enjoy your trip!
