Identifying a Hernia with an Ostomy

This topic is about understanding how to identify if you have developed a hernia around your stoma site. Here are some helpful points to consider:

1. Look for a visible or noticeable bulge around your stoma. This might be something you or someone else can see or feel.

2. Pay attention to any sensations of heaviness in your abdomen or a pulling feeling behind your stoma, as these can be signs of a hernia.

3. Remember that hernias can develop even if you haven't been lifting heavy objects or exerting yourself. They are quite common after abdominal surgery due to changes in muscle and tissue structure.

4. It's important to consult with a healthcare professional, such as a surgeon, gastroenterologist, or stoma nurse, for a physical examination to confirm if you have a hernia.

5. A CT scan is a useful imaging tool that can help identify or confirm the presence and size of an ostomy-related hernia.

6. Be aware that a bulge behind the stoma might affect how well your pouch adheres, so it's a good idea to get it checked out promptly.

7. If you are planning a reversal or any additional abdominal surgery, hernia repair can often be done at the same time.
