Red Itchy Skin Around Flange Adhesive - Advice Needed

This topic is about dealing with red, itchy, dry, and flaky skin around the area where the flange adhesive of an ostomy appliance touches the skin. Here are some helpful suggestions to address this issue:

1. Seek professional assessment:
- Consult your stoma or ostomy nurse to determine if the irritation is due to stool leakage, an adhesive allergy, or another skin issue. They can provide product-specific recommendations.

2. Consider allergy or hypersensitivity:
- The symptoms might indicate an allergic reaction to the tape, barrier adhesive, or flange extenders.
- Ask your supplier for hypoallergenic options, as many manufacturers offer versions with alternative adhesives.

3. Ensure thorough cleaning with each change:
- Use adhesive remover wipes to completely remove old residue.
- Follow up with a wet pad or washcloth to clean off any remover residue, and let the skin dry fully before applying new products.
- Some people have noticed sores or rashes when they skip using adhesive remover even once.

4. Promote skin healing:
- Allow the peristomal skin some "air time" by taking naked showers or having short periods without any appliance to let it dry and recover.
- Some use a light moisturizer between changes, but ensure it is washed off thoroughly so it doesn't interfere with the adhesive.
- Topical barrier sprays, creams, or seals can provide a protective layer; check with your nurse for compatible products.

5. Appliance wear and fit tips:
- Avoid over-tightening the ostomy belt, as excessive pressure can irritate the skin.
- Shorter wear times might help if output is undermining the barrier and causing irritation.

6. General comfort strategies:
- Shower without the pouch when possible.
- For those with very sensitive skin, minimizing skin contact and maximizing air exposure can help reduce rashes where the pouch touches.
