I have lost track of whom, but for the last year or two, I have been informing Canadians they are eligible to receive a disability tax credit if they have a stoma that is non-reversible. I have a stoma and need ostomy supplies, which qualified me. I get it, and so can you. See below for CRA info saying everyone with an irreversible stoma automatically gets this DTC (Disability Tax Credit).

I did this some years ago and received $17,000 right up front from eligible back taxes, and this year there is a $9,500 tax credit. It goes up a bit each year, and if you cannot use all that tax credit, your wife or primary caregiver can use the leftover balance. You need to apply, and it is not easy to get it right. I did it myself, and I was successful on the first try.

If you would like to try to do it yourself, you need to fill in Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) form T2201. Be sure to check the box YES in section 3 on the first page, which will have CRA back check and adjust your back taxes to the year you had your ostomy operation. You will need to have a doctor sign it as well. I know my doctor quite well, so I filled out his part, and then he just had to read it over and sign, which he did with no problem.

There is a Canadian association called the “Ostomy Canada Society.” They have a brochure that covers this Canadian tax credit. It can be found at - https://www.ostomycanada.ca/dtc. I strongly suggest you go to that site as I did. They will show you how (exact wording required) to apply. Do not give up if you are rejected; reapply after making some changes to your form. YOU ARE ELIGIBLE!

www.disabilitytaxservice.ca is a private company that will likely charge you, but I suspect they can help you, or perhaps your accountant can help as well.

Lots of luck..... JIM7

PS: Following is the address to get the DTC form.

Thanks for the reminder about the tax credit. I am eligible for last year, but you can't apply unless you have had it for a year. There was also a podcast (and I think it is still up) on the Ostomy Canada website where they really help out with what to put into the forms.

When I found this web site, I didn't think its name had anything to do with actually meeting an ostomate but I later learned there were some folks who did meet and develop relationships. How good is that? That wasn't my intention. I definitely didn't want anyone to meet me. I felt broken and wasn't prepared to express those feelings. I thought it was a place where ostomates wrote about themselves, posed questions, shared thoughts, told jokes and, sometimes, just vented. I thought of it as a community of folks with similar interests and various degrees of experience. Mostly I found some of the most caring, selfless, wise and understanding people I ever imagined. I was so impressed with some of the writings; not because of their literary value but the way in which they addressed such a very complex environment. I read hundreds of exchanges and admired the way folks cared for each other. I became hopeful with my own situation and looked forward to the next day's offerings. Certainly some contributors stood out with their experience or particular skills in addressing some things but it seemed like a total effort with synergistic results. I felt blessed to have found this site. I still do.
