Hartman's pouch leakage - Is it normal?

This topic is about a person who has had a permanent colostomy since 2006 due to uncontrollable diarrhea. They have a Hartmann’s pouch, which is a disconnected part of the rectum that remains after a colostomy. For many years, this pouch was inactive, and they only irrigated it twice a year. However, while camping, they unexpectedly experienced a large amount of clear or yellow fluid leaking from the rectal pouch whenever their bladder was slightly full. At the same time, their stoma was producing an unusually high output. This situation resolved after two days, coinciding with severe dehydration. They are now concerned about several issues and are seeking advice and experiences from others.

Here are some points to consider:

1. The person is wondering if such "flushing" from an unused pouch is normal.
2. They are concerned whether their recent Crohn’s disease relapse could be affecting the dormant pouch.
3. They are questioning if a temporary fistula to the bladder might have formed and then sealed itself.
4. They have noticed a new symptom of pronounced lower-leg swelling when dehydrated.
5. A medical review is scheduled, but they are looking for real-life experiences in the meantime.

Additional information includes:

- The person's gastroenterologist was surprised they had never experienced pouch leakage before, as discussed during a colonoscopy in March.
- They clarified that a Hartmann’s pouch is the disconnected rectal segment left after a colostomy, which still produces mucus and should be flushed with an enema about twice a year to prevent pressure build-up and rupture.

Advice and insights from others include:

- Many people emphasize that sudden high-volume, watery, or mucous leakage from a Hartmann’s pouch is not normal, and they recommend immediate assessment by a colorectal or gastroenterology specialist.
