Leak at Work: Seeking Ostomy Advice and Bag Recommendations

This topic is about managing ileostomy leaks at work, focusing on preparation, the choice between filtered and non-filtered pouches, and reliable bag options. Here are some helpful tips and insights shared by others:

1. Always have a "leak kit" ready for work or travel. This should include a spare pouch, flange, barrier ring, adhesive remover, skin-prep wipes, stoma powder, creams like hydrocortisone and lidocaine, paper towels or wet wipes, a towel, and a complete change of clothes. It's a good idea to keep similar kits in your car, desk, and even with trusted friends.

2. Consider wearing a support wrap or belt over your pouch for extra security and to help conceal it. Some options include:
- StealthBelt, which comes in various models and is available on Amazon for around $80.
- Zippered swim or sport wraps that fully enclose the pouch, can be unzipped for emptying, and work both in and out of water.

3. When it comes to filters, many people with ileostomies find that filters can clog quickly and may not be beneficial. Some have switched to non-filtered bags, while others have had no issues with filtered B. Braun bags. It really comes down to personal preference.

4. If you encounter defective supplies, such as multiple leaking bags from the same box, contact your supplier. Distributors often replace faulty lots.

5. Tail-end seepage with Velcro closures is a known issue. To help with this:
- Place a small piece of toilet paper inside the tail to catch moisture.
- Make sure the Velcro is firmly rolled and fastened. If seepage continues, consider trying a different lot or manufacturer.

6. Some product experiences shared include:
- ConvaTec Natura two-piece system, with specific flange, seal, and pouch numbers, with changes twice a week and only two user-caused leaks reported.
- Coloplast pouch 15821, with rare leaks.
- B. Braun filtered bags, with no issues reported by one user.

7. Be cautious with sharp objects near your pouch to avoid punctures.

8. Remember that accidents can happen. It's important to maintain perspective, laugh it off, and get back to your normal activities.

9. For discreet disposal while on the go, flushable or biodegradable dog-waste bags from Amazon can be very useful.
